Dying Bonsai

I bought a bonsai tree at the university plant sale at the start of term, it’s been about 3 weeks and it has already started dying! I saw white fluff on the soil which I later confirmed to be fungus. This fungus is not only on the roots but is also eating away the trunk! The photo is of a leaf which is think is affected by the fungus…or it could just be burnt.

The guy I bought it from said ‘you can never over water a bonsai’, so I left in a tub of water for a few days then took it out for a day and left it in again for a few days. This has lead to the fungus, which according an internet forum should go away once the soil becomes dry. I can only hope.

Otherwise the trees is in good condition, there’s moss growing (which is a good sign) and it’s curvy (that’s down to personal preference). I identified it to be a White Alder although no formal identification came with it.
